The first Candy Dance was organized in
1919 by Genoa resident Lillian Virgin Finnegan to raise money to
purchase street lights for Genoa. Finnegan and the women of Genoa made
homemade candy to serve at the dance. In the following years, the
candy-making and Candy Dance continued each year as a way to raise
funds to pay Genoa’s electric bill for the street lights. The
Arts and Crafts Faire was added in the 1970s. Currently, the funds
raised by the Town of Genoa during the Candy Dance weekend provide a
substantial portion of Genoa’s annual budget. A number of the
street lights purchased after the first Candy Dance continue to light
up the Town of Genoa to this day.
